SQUARE ONE TV (TV)
Summary
One in this series of children's educational programs
that present math skills in a fun and fast paced manner
with the help of adult cast members who perform in a
variety of short sketches. This episode opens with
"American Blandstand," in which two aliens and one
audience member play "rate that record," and the host
teaches the contestants how to find an average. Next, a
rapping judge uses math to clear a skateboarder who has
been accused of stealing a pie. In "Backstage with
Blackstone" a magician demonstrates some mathematics
tricks using coins. The House Band then sings "Nine,
Nine, Nine" live at Tilley's. The song explains some
interesting facts about the number nine. The next
segment features two brothers on a road trip; one
teaches the other how to figure out the map scale and,
using the scale, how to calculate how long it will take
to reach their destination. In a segment called
"Mathnet," based on the television program "Dragnet,"
two mathematicians named Kate Monday and George
Frankly use numbers to help solve crimes. This episode,
part one in a series, finds the math mongers looking for
a thieving monkey. The program concludes with a
preview of the next installment.
Cataloging of this program was made possible by the
