FERNWOOD TONIGHT {FERNWOOD 2 NIGHT}: CORPORAL PUNISHMENT (TV)
Summary
One in this series of satirical, mock talk shows set in Fernwood, Ohio, hosted by the smarmy Barth Gimble and his dim-witted sidekick Jerry Hubbard.
Barth opens the show by reading "hate" mail that seems to single out the smug host for praise. Next up is a "Rocket to Stardom" segment featuring Darryl Washington, a small boy bused in from Cincinnati, who performs a disco hula-hoop number. Refugee Mian Co Tiam then discusses his book "Yankee Doodle Gook." Bandleader Happy Kyne joins the panel to recount his childhood illnesses, chief among them being the fact that he was born with one nostril. Finally, high school principal Marshall Petty defends his use of corporal punishment as safe and caring -- as he only uses the fleshy palm of his hand; he enthusiastically demonstrates his method on coed Debbie Dunbar, to the intense interest of all present. Commercials deleted.
(Martin Mull and Fred Willard reprised their roles as Barth Gimble and Jerry Hubbard in "America Tonight," telecast in syndication in 1978.)
