WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY, THE: CINDERELLA (TV)
Summary
One in a series of special presentations from Disney. This third version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's only original television musical, "Cinderella," features a updated book and a multi-racial cast. As the story begins, a prince wanders through his town disguised as a commoner. He meets a servant girl, Cinderella, who captures his heart. But she is quickly taken away by her evil stepmother and wicked stepsisters. Later, the Prince returns home to the palace where his valet, Lionel, chastises him for going out in disguise. Then, the Prince is summoned by his mother who wants him to throw a ball and invite all the eligible maidens in the land. Although he is not happy with the idea, he gives in to his mother's demands. Lionel announces the news to everyone in the kingdom and begins preparations for the party. Later, Cinderella's stepsisters prepare for the ball. They are coached on what to say and how to present themselves by their mother, who claims that love has nothing to do with getting a husband. Cinderella wishes she could go to the ball, but unfortunately she has nothing to wear. Her relatives go off to the event, leaving Cinderella at home, alone. In their absence, Cinderella is visited by her fairy godmother, who magically transforms a pumpkin and some white mice into a coach, horses, and coachmen, and turns Cinderella's rags into a beautiful gown, proving that impossible things can happen everyday. Cinderella also discovers that she has glass slippers on her feet. The Fairy Godmother warns her to leave the ball by midnight, at which time the spell will be broken and everything will return to the way it was before. Cinderella travels to the ball where the Prince, who has been dancing with each and every girl in the room, is immediately taken with her beauty and grace. The two spend the rest of the evening together in awe of their newfound love. Suddenly, Cinderella discovers that the clock is about to strike twelve. She races from the ball, leaving behind one glass slipper. The next day, the Prince vows to try the slipper on every girl in the kingdom until he is reunited with his true love. The prince is pleasantly surprised when he discovers the real identity of his true love, and Cinderella learns that no matter what your station in life, you can achieve your heart's dreams. The following songs are included in this version: "The Sweetest Sounds" (written by Richard Rodgers for "No Strings"), "The Prince Is Giving a Ball," "In My Own Little Corner," "Falling in Love With Love" (a Rodgers and Hart song written for "The Boys from Syracuse") "Impossible," "It's Possible," "Ten Minutes Ago," "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?" "Stepsisters' Lament," and "There's Music in You" (written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for the 1953 film "Main Street to Broadway"). Includes commercials.
(Network varies; this series was also telecast on NBC from 1961 to 1981 and on CBS from 1981 to 1983.)
