WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY, THE: TOWER OF TERROR (TV)
Summary
One in this series of Disney movies presented under the umbrella title "The Wonderful World of Disney." This children's drama concerns a brave uncle and niece who must solve a sixty-year-old mystery and help save five lost souls. Anna often helps her Uncle Buzzy with his work for tabloid newspapers like The National Inquisitor. Ever since he lost his high-profile job at the The Los Angeles Banner, Buzzy has given up serious journalism and has made a living writing fantastic tales of alien abductions and ghostly encounters. But he still dreams of rebuilding his damaged career and stays in touch with his friend Jill at the Banner. Buzzy gets his chance to start afresh when an elderly lady, Abigail Gregory, approaches him with a lead on the famous mystery of five people who vanished from the Hollywood Tower Hotel on Halloween of 1939. Abigail claims she can prove the cause of the disappearance of all five people -- including child star Sally Shine, her nanny Miss Partridge, two guests named Gilbert and Caroline, and Dewey the bellhop. Abigail says she saw the evil Miss Partridge conducting a black magic ritual that backfired, causing the five people to be tossed into a spiritual limbo. She even reveals where to find the book of magic spells in the deserted hotel. Buzzy and Anna team up with Abigail and Chris, the hotel caretaker -- who is also Dewey's grandson -- and they embark on a mission to solve the mystery. In the empty hotel, Buzzy and Anna realize that the building is haunted by five ghosts who have been there since 1939. Terrified at first, they become acquainted with the ghosts and grow determined to help these lost souls trapped in the hotel. They must find out exactly what happened on the Halloween of 1939 in order to liberate the five ghosts; and as a result, Buzzy could revive his career with a groundbreaking news story, and Chris could inherit and reopen the hotel. But just as they think they have the solution to their problems, Jill uncovers a sixty-year old secret that changes the entire scenario and almost leads to total disaster. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements. Commercials include John Madden for Ace Hardware, Paul Reiser for AT&T, and Phylicia Rashad for Pop-Secret; public service announcements include Joely Fisher for Children First.
(Network varies; this series was also telecast on NBC from 1961 to 1981 and on CBS from 1981 to 1983.)
