ABC MINI-SERIES: OPRAH WINFREY PRESENTS: THE WEDDING {PART 2 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:52469. Part two of this two-part made-for-television movie. Based on Dorothy West's novel, "The Wedding" concerns a family in the elite black community of Martha's Vineyard in the 1950s. As the wedding draws nearer, Lute tries to ingratiate himself into Ovalite society and into Shelby's heart. Although everyone else in the Oval rejects Lute, Shelby finds herself increasingly drawn to him -- a fact that does not escape Meade's attention. The love triangle between Lute, Shelby, and Meade reaches a climax as a fight breaks out between the two men. The altercation, and the Coles' concern for Shelby's future, prompts her to reconsider her engagement. In the meantime, her father, Clark, recalls his marriage with Corrine and the events that led him to seek out an affair. Told in flashback, Clark, as a young doctor, is faced with the choice of marrying Sabina, his true love, or Corinne, the woman who would be an asset to his career and status.

While his marriage to Corinne is beneficial, both spouses suffer from a lack of love -- until Clark begins an affair with a woman named Rachel. Thinking of his own decision to marry for the wrong reasons, Clark suggests that his daughter is marrying Meade for his color, fully aware that she never considered any black suitors. Her father's words resonate with Shelby when she and Meade experience discrimination in a restaurant and he cannot handle the situation. Eventually, Shelby calls off the wedding because she is so plagued with doubts. Upon realizing that Rachel will not wait indefinitely, Clark discusses the dynamics of love and marriage with Shelby. In flashback, he recalls the way duties and complications became obstacles to his parents' love. Ultimately, Shelby must assess Lute's behavior when his confusion about marriage leads to tragedy, and she fully considers the past before arriving at a decision about her wedding.
