FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON: WE HAVE CLEARED THE TOWER {PART 3 OF 12} (TV)
Summary
Continued from T:53237. Part three of this twelve-part docudrama series about the development of the U.S. space program as the country prepares to send men to the moon. Part three, entitled "We Have Cleared the Tower," chronicles the Apollo 7 mission from the perspective of a documentary filmmaker. Behind-the-scenes events surrounding Apollo 7 include the following: interviews with people who are unfamiliar to the public; a test of an emergency evacuation of the capsule with astronauts Wally Schirra, Walt Cunningham, and Donn Eisele; the surprising sense of humor expressed by workers and astronauts during the important mission; the astronauts' candid on-camera comments about possible problems that could cost them their lives and the country its space program; the relationship between the astronauts and the nurse who administers health tests; the competitive rivalry between astronauts; the rumor that Schirra will be retiring from service after this mission; the way Schirra and his wife have maintained a happy marriage despite the pressures of space travel; Eisele's thoughts about the fire in Apollo 1, which killed three fellow astronauts; clashes between astronauts and the builders of the capsule; questions about the true nature of their mission in space; the general mood as the astronauts are shuttled off to the launch pad for the mission, and its potential cancellation due to winds blowing across the air field; and the decision to continue when a moment of opportunity presents itself. Continues with T:53239.
