WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY, THE: MIRACLE AT MIDNIGHT (TV)

Summary

One of this series of Disney movies presented under the umbrella title "The Wonderful World of Disney." This made-for-television movie is based on the real events that took place in Denmark in 1943, when the Danish people united in an effort that saved 7,000 Jews from the horrors of the Holocaust. Denmark had been occupied by the Germans in relative peace for three years, when the Nazis decided to "purge" the country of all Jews, beginning on Rosh Hashanah. Fortunately, a sympathetic officer among the Germans secretly got word out about the plan a few days before it was to be executed. Miraculously within those few days, nearly all the Jews were able to go into hiding, so that when the attack was made there was virtually no one left to arrest. The story centers around the Koster family which consists of Dr. Karl Koster, the chief surgeon in a hospital, his wife Doris, and their children Hendrik and Else. Dr. Koster contributes enormously to the cause by hiding hundreds of people in the hospital, in his home, and by helping them to escape. Although Doris Koster is initially unwilling for any of them to become involved, eventually the entire Koster family joins in the effort. And though their mission is essentially successful, and Dr. Koster and his two children manage to escape to Sweden along with thousands of other refugees, it is Doris Koster who ends up paying the price. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements. This program is closed-captioned.

(Network varies; this series was also telecast on NBC from 1961 to 1981 and on CBS from 1981 to 1983.)

Cataloging of this program was made possible by The Hearst Corporation, 1998.
