CALIFORNIA'S GOLD: SANTA CRUZ (TV)

Summary

One in this series of travel programs featuring host Huell Howser, who travels around California, exploring the state's diversity. This installment focuses on the town of Santa Cruz, and begins with a rendition of the theme song, "California, Here I Come," by Don Stevens of The Nuclear Whale Saxophone Orchestra. The first segment features a tour of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, a historic landmark dating from the early 1900s. Howser rides the two oldest attractions -- the Carousel and the Giant Dipper -- and then visits Marini's old-fashioned salt water taffy shop to speak with proprietors Joe and Joey Marini. Howser then provides a history of the boardwalk. The next segment focuses on surfing, featuring visits to several surf spots and the Surfing Museum, as well as interviews with the founders of the Santa Cruz Surfing Club, as well as Jack O'Neill, inventor of the first wetsuit designed for surfing. Finally, Howser explains that due to time constraints, they are unable to visit other local sites such as the Cement Boat. The show concludes with local band El Mambo Combo performing the theme song.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by the CBS Foundation, 1998.
