NORTHERN EXPOSURE: FISH STORY (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy/drama series about the colorful inhabitants of Cicely, a rural Alaskan town where native New Yorker Joel Fleischman establishes his first medical practice. In this episode, Maggie's offer to prepare Joel's Passover seder leaves him feeling uncomfortable. Instead, Joel goes fishing with Ed and Chris to enjoy the great outdoors and clear his head. But Joel's fishing reel gets hooked on something, and a massive force pulls his whirling line away from shore. Ed and Chris wonder whether Joel has hooked the infamous sea monster of East Loon Lake, named Gooney. Meanwhile, Holling is happy to be mastering painting; and Ruth-Anne has a mental breakdown, closes the store midday, and steals Chris's motorcycle to escape town. Word of Joel's herculean struggle with Gooney becomes public knowledge, and the town rallies behind his effort to bring the monster to shore. Maurice criticizes Holling's artwork, angering Shelly and bruising the budding artist's fragile ego. Ruth-Anne, meanwhile, accepts an adventurous offer from a couple of bikers at a bar. Eventually, Joel enters a rowboat so the line won't break and gets dragged out in the lake. But Joel is shocked when Rabbi Schulman climbs out of the water and into the boat, and then Gooney violently rocks the boat, capsizing the small vessel. In Cicely, Holling asks Chris for advice about the value of art as a hobby, and Maurice tries to force Ed to relinquish the key to the general store. When Joel and Rabbi Schulman wind up in Gooney's belly, they discuss Joel's future and his relationship with Maggie. In the meantime, Ruth-Anne and her biker friends contemplate the meaning of the open road, and the townpeople desperately search for Joel. Commercials deleted.
