DER LINDBERGHFLUG -- OZEANFLUG {THE LINDBERGH FLIGHT -- OCEANFLIGHT} {GERMAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES} (TV)

Summary

This award-winning program, featuring the radio cantata by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, dramatizes Charles Lindbergh's perilous crossing of the Atlantic. This program, reminiscent of the studio-set adventure films of the twenties and thirties, begins with a prologue that unfavorably weighs Lindbergh's achievements against his actions aiding Hitler. The opera itself is divided into scenes punctuated by spoken narration, summarizing the stages of Lindbergh's flight. Narrated by a radio announcer reporting on the air, the program includes such scenes as Lindbergh preparing for his trip; the pilot gathering supplies and charting his route; his mid-flight struggles against fog and snow; examples of media reactions to his flight; and his sighting and landing in France. The final scene is accompanied by archival black-and-white footage of Lindbergh landing. The narration includes the following highlights: "First: A challenging appeal to fly over the ocean"; "Second: Introduction to the pilot"; "Third: The airman's journey towards New York for his flight to Europe"; "Fourth: The City of New York alerts the ships"; "Fifth: During his flight, the pilot struggled with the fog"; "Sixth: A snowstorm rose overnight"; "Seventh: Sleep"; "Eighth: During the entire flight the aviator's good fortune made American headlines"; "Ninth: The fortunate man's thoughts"; "Tenth: The French Press wrote: He flies: the storms above him, the sea around him and below him the shadow of Nungesser"; "Eleventh: "Of the pilot's conversation with his engine"; "Twelfth: At last the aviator spots fishermen"; "Thirteenth: At the Bourget Airport near Paris a huge crowd awaits the aviator on the night of May 21, 1927"; "Fourteenth: The aviator's arrival in Paris."
