ON THE ROAD WITH CHARLES KURALT {DOWSING; ONE-ROOM SCHOOLHOUSE; BRICKMAKER; CABLE CARS; IOWA} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of television magazines, in which host Charles Kuralt presents clips from his twenty-five years of travel journalism through the back roads of America. This program opens with a demonstration by a man in Maryland of dowsing, the use of a divining rod to find underground sources of water. Dowsing also can be performed by other instruments such as a pair of crossing rods, as shown by Kuralt. The second segment features Pilot Town, Louisiana, and its one-room schoolhouse. Run by teacher Andy Spirer, the school currently serves three students who otherwise would have to travel ten miles by boat to receive an education. Next, Kuralt talks to ninety-three-year-old George Black, who has been making bricks by hand since 1889 using nothing but earth, water, fire, and mule power. Black walks through his native town of Winstron-Salem, North Carolina, pointing out buildings that have been constructed using his bricks. The fourth segment examines the cable cars of San Francisco. Once numbering over 600, there are now only thirty-eight. Kuralt talks with residents of the city who love the slow-moving, intimate scale cable cars and their clanging bells. Kuralt closes the show with a visit to the farmland of Iowa. Local farmers show the process of farming the richest land on earth not only as it was done at the turn of the twentieth century, but also as the pioneers did. Includes commercials.

In addition, the series was reworked for and aired on the Travel Channel in 1993.)
