HUGHLEYS, THE: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The premiere in this comedy series about the Hughleys, a black family that moves to the white suburbs. In this episode, Darryl Hughley is excited about his beautiful new house. He and Yvonne reminisce about their first tiny apartment. However, Darryl wonders if living in the suburbs was such a good idea. Later, Darryl meets neighbor Dave Rogers, who's immediately affable, and another resident, elderly Mrs. Fitch, who asks him to "fetch" her trash. Meanwhile, Darryl and Yvonne's son Michael is excited about his birthday the next day. However, he gets into an argument with Darryl when he says he'd rather listen to Hanson's music than that of Marvin Gaye. Later, Darryl's best friend Milsap drops by to check out the new house and learns that Darryl now golfs. Milsap is concerned that Darryl is on a "slippery slope" toward losing his blackness. Darryl takes daughter Sydney to help get Michael's birthday gift and while at the store he lets her pick out a doll. Surprisingly, she has her heart set on a white doll, much to Darryl's chagrin. Darryl feels particularly embarrassed by taking the doll to a checkout line with a black woman at the cash register. Meanwhile, Dave's wife Sally helps Yvonne unpack and set up the kitchen. When Darryl arrives home, Yvonne and the two white neighbors are having a great time. Yvonne is angry when Darryl's racist rants chase their new neighbors away. By the next morning, Darryl admits that perhaps he'd been overreacting. Yvonne tells Darryl to apologize to Dave, but he refuses. That night, as Darryl struggles to set up a basketball hoop for Michael's birthday, Dave comes over to help him out. The two men make amends, much to Yvonne's delight. Includes commercials.
