Summary
One in this series of science fiction dramas about FBI agents Mulder and Scully and their investigations into "unsolvable" cases involving paranormal phenomena. This season premiere begins with a summary of the major events from the previous season, which ended with Mulder's apparent suicide. This episode reveals that the dead man in question is not Mulder, but Ostelhoff, an agent with the Department of Defense who had been keeping Mulder under surveillance. Scully maintains the pretense that Mulder is dead so they can research and expose a plot to create an alien hoax, which has been perpetrated by the Department of Defense and the FBI. With the help of Agent Kritschgau, Mulder learns that the alien hoax was apparently fabricated to cover up the U.S. government's controversial biological experiments and arms development. Mulder also gains access to highly secured areas of the Department of Defense, where he finds evidence of the government experiments and involvement with possible extraterrestrial life, as well as a serum that could combat Scully's cancer. Meanwhile, Scully has performed a scientific study that links her illness with supposed alien genetic materials from a recovered ice core. She brings her findings to the FBI panel, hoping to prove that the people who created the alien hoax also planted a man-made disease in her body. But the cancer is spreading so rapidly that she may not have time to prove any of her findings. Commercials deleted.
