WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY, THE: SELMA, LORD, SELMA (TV)

Summary

One of this series of Disney movies presented under the umbrella title "The Wonderful World of Disney." This made-for-television movie is based on the real events that took place in the 1960s in Selma, Alabama, during the civil rights movement, as seen from the eyes of a young girl, Sheyann Webb.

The program begins with Sheyann meeting Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the first day he arrives in town to begin a series of peaceful demonstrations as a push to get blacks registered to vote. Next, a white preacher, Jonathan Daniels arrives in town to aid in the demonstrations, boarding with the family of Sheyann's best friend. Meanwhile, Sheyann's parents and school teacher are somewhat leery of her burgeoning interest in politics.

Dr. King and his followers prepare for a demonstration in front of the voter registration building, while the Ku Klux Klan burns crosses to scare them off. On the day of the demonstration, Dr. King and others get arrested for speaking out. Sheyann continues pushing for freedom. With Dr. King sitting in jail, Sheyann, Jonathan, and others prepare to march to Montgomery in protest, while police troops try to stop them. Commercials deleted.

(Network varies; this series was also telecast on NBC from 1961 to 1981 and on CBS from 1981 to 1983.)

Cataloging of this program has been made possible by Verizon Communications.
