TWILIGHT OF THE GOLDS, THE (TV)
Summary
This made-for-television movie, based on a stage play, explores the ethics of genetic testing on a fetus for non-medical traits. The drama centers around young Suzanne Gold who, on her third wedding anniversary, discovers she is pregnant. At first, her husband Rob, her parents, Phyllis and Walter, and her gay brother David, welcome the news. As a doctor at a gene research lab, Rob convinces Suzanne to have the fetus tested, and they discover that the baby has the genetic makeup for homosexuality. Upon learning this news, Suzanne, under the influence of her husband and with the support of her parents, considers having an abortion in order to spare her child the angst and difficulty of growing up gay. Against Suzanne's instructions, Phyllis tells David about the dilemma, and he is outraged that his sister would even consider getting rid of the baby simply because it might be gay. He confronts his parents, asking them what they would have done if they had been aware of his sexual orientation before he was born. Unfortunately, their response is not as positive as he had hoped, and as a result, a rift develops between David and the rest of the Golds. David's lover, Steven, intervenes to try and reconcile the Gold family. But months later, the family meets at the premiere of an opera that David is producing. Rob's absence, and a very pregnant Suzanne, help to foster the reconciliation of the Golds. Commercials deleted.
