DAVID FROST: INTERVIEWS I'LL NEVER FORGET (TV)
Summary
One in this series of programs in which Sir David Frost presents highlights from thirty years of his television interviews -- from the 1960s to the 1990s. The program begins with brief clips of past interviews with the following people: Johnny Carson; Nelson Mandela; John Lennon and Yoko Ono; Elizabeth Taylor; Norman Schwarzkopf; Elton John; Sammy Davis, Jr.; Woody Allen; and Margaret Thatcher. Next, Frost focuses on excerpts of three particularly compelling interviews. First comes a discussion with heavyweight-boxing champion Muhammad Ali from December 1968. During the course of the interview, Ali quotes the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, stating that white people are devils. Ali and Frost then debate the issue, referring to Biblical passages and to important events in world history such as American race slavery and South African apartheid. Next, Frost returns to an interview with Sen. Robert Kennedy (D-New York), also from 1968. Kennedy begins by expressing pride in his role during the Cuban missile crisis and the 1960 elections. He also comments on patriotism, his interest in physical activity, and his hopes for his personal legacy and the future of the United States. The program concludes with an interview with former President Richard Nixon, which focuses on the Watergate hearings. Nixon and Frost examine the definition of "obstruction of justice" and analyze a portion of the transcripts of Nixon's conversations with John Dean. Next, Nixon gives an emotional account of his resignation from political office, describing his feelings of having let down the American people as well as those close to him. Commercials deleted.
