JACKIE GLEASON SHOW, THE {SHOW #5 RECONSTRUCTION
FINE EDIT} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy/variety series featuring Jackie Gleason. This reconstruction of the original episode was assembled by The Museum of Television & Radio from various kinescopes and videotape elements. (A list of segments not included on this tape immediately follow this summary.) This program includes "The Honeymooners," a series of sketches about Ralph Kramden, a blustery bus driver, his long-suffering wife Alice, and their neighbors, Ed and Trixie Norton. In this sketch, after Alice (Audrey Meadows) apparently gives the wrong answer on a quiz show -- the Kramdens go home with only the consolation prize -- a year's supply of Krinkly Krax cereal. While Ralph (Gleason) berates Alice, neighbor Ed Norton (Art Carney) sympathizes having had his own bad experience on a quiz show. The couple's fortunes look up, however, when the show's crew and sponsor visit them at home to tell them that Alice's answer was technically correct and that Ralph will get a chance to answer the jackpot question; but Ralph is unable to answer the question correctly and the Kramdens lose out again. Next, Gleason introduces Morton Downey, who plays the piano and sings "Dear Old Donegal," "My Blue Heaven," "Carolina Moon," and "Same Old Shillelagh." This is followed by a sketch involving Charlie Bratton, the Loudmouth (Gleason) and Clem Finch (Carney) in which Charlie's attempt to get Clem a raise backfires. Gleason comes out again, giving high praise to choreographer June Taylor before presenting a number entitled "Order" with the June Taylor Dancers. Next, announcer Paul Luther introduces a sketch where the Poor Soul (Gleason) and his girlfriend (Lee Joyce) get a television set. As the show concludes, Morton Downey comes out again for a bow and Gleason plugs the premiere of Jane Froman's new show. Includes commercials.

(Segments not included: opening titles; opening number featuring the June Taylor Dancers; monologue featuring Jackie Gleason; New Schick "20" commercial; and American Chicle Co. Clorets mints and gum commercial.)

(This program contains minor technical problems. This represents the best copy of this program currently available to the Museum.)
