CALIFORNIA'S GOLD: RAILCARS (TV)
Summary
One in this series of travel programs featuring host Huell Howser, who travels around California, exploring the state's diversity. In this program, Howser pays tribute to the state's railroads. First, he visits the "California State Railroad Museum" in Sacramento, where his host is chief museum ranger Stu Macy. First, Macy educates Howser about handcars, including their history and usage. Then he shows Howser several different handcars and how they work. Next, Macy takes Howser to the Fourteenth Annual U.S. Handcar Races. Macy explains why the races started, after which Howser speaks with several of the participants about their sport. At this point in the program, Howser travels farther north, to McCloud, California. There, he rides on a rail-car "motorcade" through the mountains after talking with some of the participants about the event and the heritage of the rail car. Includes a commercial.
