Summary
One in this series of talk shows hosted by Charlie Rose. In this program, Rose interviews Michael Eisner, chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Company. Eisner explains how he convinced Sid Bass to hire him to run the company and cites support he received from his future Disney partner Frank Wells. Topics discussed include: the strengths and weaknesses of Disney's various acquisitions, particularly Capitol Cities/ABC; his theory about the way to turn a studio around and make it a success; the difficulties that Jamie Tarses had in running the California division of ABC; the ability of programming executives to turn ideas into reality; his hands-on approach to management; Walt Disney's influence on the company long after his death; the failure of certain animation projects and the effects of those failures on other Disney businesses; and Disney's expansion into new theme parks and cruises. Next, Eisner explores his company's distribution problems in China; fundamentalist Christians' displeasure over Disney's positive attitudes toward its gay employees; competition waged by Bill Gates; Eisner's mistake in choosing Michael Ovitz to be his second in command; and the lawsuit brought by Jeffrey Katzenberg against Disney. Eisner concludes the program by talking about his successor; the importance of his strong family background with respect to Disney; the importance of philanthropy in America; and his passion for architecture, especially in relation to Disney construction sites.
