SERVING IN SILENCE: THE MARGARETHE CAMMERMEYER STORY (TV)

Summary

This movie tells the true story of Colonel Margarethe Cammermeyer, a decorated war veteran who fought the Army's efforts to discharge her for being gay. As the film begins, Cammermeyer leaves the Army to move closer to her children who live with their father in Seattle and serve in the National Guard. While visiting friends there, Cammermeyer meets Diane, an artist, with whom she develops a romantic relationship. When Cammermeyer's father comes to live with her, Cammermeyer decides to be honest with him about her homosexuality. Her need for his approval also prompts her to impress him by seeking a higher level of security clearance in pursuit of a generalship; it is during an interview for this clearance that Cammermeyer -- certain that her years of service will override the Army's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy -- admits her homosexuality. When she learns that her commission is at risk, she decides to fight the Army's regulations, facing a Board of Officers Hearing and, after her discharge, a suit against the Federal Government. Through Cammermeyer's legal battle, her relationships with her Mormon-raised sons and her stern father are strengthened, though problems develop with Diane, who is closeted and would prefer the comfortable anonymity and pension that would come with Cammermeyer's resignation to the strain and notoriety that accompany a fight against the government.
