BEFORE YOUR EYES: ANGELIE'S SECRET (TV)
Summary
This documentary, narrated by Julia Roberts, profiles eleven-year-old Angelie Diya from Jupiter, Florida, who has had the AIDS virus since birth. The program begins with Angelie talking about the fact that she contracted the disease from her mother, who is deceased. Angelie's adoptive parents, Rick and Rita Diya, worry about the repercussions their daughter will face if she decides to make her illness public knowledge. At the end of the school year, Angelie goes to Camp Heartland, in Blairstown, NJ, a camp developed specifically for children with AIDS. The camp's founder, Neil Willenson, notes that he got the idea for the camp after witnessing the ostracism of a neighbor's child when it was revealed that the child had AIDS.
Dr. Philip Pizzo, of the National Institutes of Health, talks briefly about the importance of positive thinking in improving a child's health. Rick and Rita talk to the parents of Jamie Wildner, who is Angelie's best friend, about Angelie's condition. Consequently, the Wildners are disturbed that they weren't given this information earlier, and they are unsure whether they will allow Jamie to continue playing with Angelie. Thereafter, both Peggy and Jamie Wildner get tested for the virus. Rita then calls the parents of Angelie's other friends to let them know about Angelie's condition. Although some of the parents are supportive, others, such as Cheryl and Joe Rossi, wonder what dangers their children had been exposed to. On Angelie's first day of fifth grade, she makes a public announcement via the school's television station about the fact that she has AIDS, and she has a discussion about her condition with her classmates. The following evening, the parents of Angelie's schoolmates meet to talk about AIDS, and the meeting is covered by the local news. This prompts Stephanie Ray, an AIDS-infected child in a nearby community, to follow Angelie's example. With the support of her parents, Stephanie reveals her condition to her peers as well. The next segment features Angelie's involvement with Dr. Jerry Jacobson and his associates Harvey Grossman and Carl Firley, who are developing machinery that they believe will cure AIDS by employing electromagnetic therapy. Angelie's doctor, Greta Stiebel-Chin, offers a warning about false hopes that might be raised by this untried process, and Dr. Pizzo discusses the progress that Angelie is making with an experimental combination of drugs. Next, the program follows Angelie and others from Camp Heartland on their "Journey of Hope" along the eastern seaboard, where they spread the word among their peers about children living with AIDS. Angelie and fellow campers Joey Diaolo, Andre Bland, and Grant Lewis share their stories with other children. The documentary ends with an update on the status of the individuals featured throughout the story, including comments on Angelie's current state of health and sense of well-being. Includes commercials and promos. Commercials include George Brett for Ben-Gay pain relieving rub.
