GREAT PERFORMANCES: SONDHEIM: A CELEBRATION AT CARNEGIE HALL (TV)
Summary
NOTE: No audio on Intro and Outro of main program.
One in this series of programs on the performing arts. This star-studded tribute honors the work of composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim with the American Theater Orchestra under the direction of Paul Gemignani. Jerry Hadley and Eugene Perry begin the evening by weaving "Johanna" and "Pretty Women" into a "Sweeney Todd Suite." Comedian Bill Irwin officially opens the program with a comic routine praising Sondheim, after which members of the Carnegie Hall Broadway Chorus perform "Loveland" from "Follies" before Madeline Kahn, accompanied by Mark Jacoby and Jeanne Lehman, sings the humorous "Getting Married Today" from "Company."
Next, Liza Minnelli does a song-and-dance routine to "Back in Business" from "Dick Tracy" accompanied by Billy Stritch, followed by George Lee Andrews, James Naughton, and Michael Jeter performing a medley of Sondheim tunes -- "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs" from "Follies," "Love, I Hear" from "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," and "Live Alone and Like It" from "Dick Tracy." Dorothy Loudon follows with the "loony tunes," "Losing My Mind" from "Follies" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" from "Company."
Next on the program the Boys Choir of Harlem sings "Our Time" from "Merrily We Roll Along"; the group is then joined by Betty Buckley in "Children Will Listen" from "Into the Woods." Patti LuPone sings "Being Alive" from "Company," and Bill Irwin plays a goofy conductor to Karen Ziemba's vampy pianist in a whimsical version of "Sooner or Later" from "Dick Tracy." "The Ballad of Booth" from "Assassins" features Patrick Cassidy and Victor Garber in a duet, Daisy Eagan portrays a "Broadway Baby" from "Follies," and Bernadette Peters sings "Not a Day Goes By" from "Merrily We Roll Along."
Following this comes Harolyn Blackwell's "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" from "Sweeney Todd," and the sextet of Kevin Anderson, Mark Jacoby, Maureen Moore, George Lee Andrews, Beverly Lambert, and Susan Terry tells a tale in "A Weekend in the Country" from "A Little Night Music." Glenn Close sings "Send in the Clowns" from "A Little Night Music," and Liza Minnelli croons "Old Friends" from "Merrily We Roll Along." Sondheim closes the evening by introducing Peters, who is joined by the chorus in a finale of "Sunday" from "Sunday in the Park with George."
