INTERNET IN ACTION, THE: PROGRAM #1 (TV)
Summary
One in this series of programs which focuses on helping educators learn to integrate computers and the Internet into elementary classroom curriculums.
Host Harlan Kearsley introduces reporters Midge Woolsey and Jocko McKean, whose interviews with teachers and technology experts demonstrate how to navigate the Internet, and the ways in which it can supplement traditional teaching methods. Two teachers from Brooklyn elementary school P.S. 200, science teacher Janet Terkel and computer teacher Ivan Mosesman, tell how their fifth-graders have benefited from having computers in the classroom. Terkel taught a unit on pollution and acid rain by allowing pupils to do research on the Internet, then make a website on the subject. Mosesman set up video conferences with other schools via the Internet, allowing the students to exchange questions on topics they've all studied.
Kelly Willis, director of technology at Collegiate School in New York City, demonstrates how to use search engines and evaluate websites. John Bailey, director of educational technology at the Pennsylvania Department of Education, discusses the specifics of further improving education with technology. Dr. Linda Roberts of the U.S. Department of Education tells of the government's plans to increase grants to put computers in all classrooms, and to train teachers in their use.
Finally, Carol Hinkelman, technology coordinator of District 20 in Brooklyn, N.Y., tells her success story of having each of the 29 schools in her jurisdiction set up inter-connecting websites, an accomplishment which she feels has aided parents as well as teachers and students.
Cataloging of this program was made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
