CHARLIE ROSE {SOPHIA LOREN} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of talk shows hosted by Charlie Rose. In this program, Rose interviews Sophia Loren, whom he calls "one of the world's most beloved and enduring film stars." After recounting a brief history of Loren's film career, Rose questions her about her new book, "Sophia Loren's Recipes & Memories," which focuses on reminiscences prompted by the tastes and smells of familiar foods. This topic leads her to recall the strong influences of her mother and grandmother; her beginnings in movies with the help of her eventual husband, Carlo Ponti; and her long professional affiliation with director Vittorio De Sica. She then talks about the difficulty of her early relationship with Ponti and its resemblance to her unmarried parents' situation, the unexpected power of her sex appeal, and her tremendous drive to have children despite difficult pregnancies. Loren then explains the unusual reasons behind the landing of her Oscar-winning role in "Two Women" and elaborates on the ways in which that role completely altered her career, after which Rose shows a scene from the film. Next he shows a scene from "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow," and Loren explains how De Sica helped her to become a better actress. She discusses her many roles opposite Marcello Mastroianni, and a clip from their performance in "Ready to Wear" is shown. Next, Loren discusses her love affair with Cary Grant and the way in which that relationship led Ponti to propose marriage to her. She also touches on what it was like to work with various leading actors. Loren then talks about growing up poor in Italy during World War II, explaining that it affected her perceptions forever. Following a clip from her appearance in "Grumpier Old Men," she explains her reason for never appearing live on stage. She also expounds on the one person she would most like to meet and presents an idea for yet another book.
