MARY HARTMAN, MARY HARTMAN {EPISODE 127} {MARY PREPARES TO LEAVE FOR NEW YORK CITY} (TV)
Summary
The first of two episodes on this tape. One in this satirical soap opera series about Mary Hartman, a housewife from Fernwood, Ohio. In this episode, Loretta announces to Charlie her intention of going to Chicago to perform her country music act for the Worldwide Missionary convention. Charlie is not happy about her spending time away from home with Merle Jeeter, but Loretta convinces him that the convention could be great exposure for her career. Billy Twelvetrees decides to stage a sit-in to protest the government's decision to usurp American Indian land for an electrical power plant, and Martha and Grandpa Larkin decide to join his protest. In addition, Howard announces to Ed that he has sent his mother packing and is willing to accept his homosexuality openly and marry Ed. Meanwhile, Mary is packing to leave for her appearance on "The David Susskind Show" in New York, but she rapidly loses her cool as events become too stressful for her. She and Loretta have their first big argument; she also worries about Tom's drinking, thinks Heather hates her, blames herself for Howard's sexual confusion, and is forced to evacuate her house when sewer lines rupture and flood her basement.
