FREAKS AND GEEKS: KIM KELLY IS MY FRIEND (TV)
Summary
One in this series about two distinct groups of high schoolers in 1980 Michigan -- the Freaks, hoodish outcasts-by-choice who love heavy metal, cars, and defying authority; and the Geeks, physically and socially underdeveloped kids who revel in science fiction and impersonations of their comedy idols.
This episode centers around the rebellious and unpredictable Kim Kelly and the varying degrees of chaos she brings into the lives of everyone whose path she crosses. At the beginning of the program, Kim gossips to everyone about the reason behind her friend Karen's storming furiously around McKinley High; Karen was recently dumped by her boyfriend in favor of her older sister. Everyone is encouraged to steer clear of the rampaging teen. Unfortunately, freshman Sam Weir doesn't get the message. Confused after being hit in the stomach by a muscle-flexing jock, he accidentally tries to get into the wrong locker -- and it turns out to be Karen's. Karen responds to Sam's gaffe by writing the word "Geek" in enormous lipstick letters across the face of Sam's locker. The humiliated Sam confronts Karen, and she takes her attack a step further. When Sam tries to erase the mess on his locker, a school administrator catches him in the act and assumes that Sam is the culprit. Kim begins to fear that her parents will try to take her prized Gremlin car away -- so she coaches Lindsay to lie on her behalf to her parents and brings her friend home with her. Lindsay is shocked at the level of squalor in Kim's home. The two girls are unable to keep their stories straight, and Kim's mother and stepfather explode in anger, physically pushing and pulling Kim to take the car keys from her. The young women escape and drive off in the car. While Sam composes an essay as punishment for his alleged infraction of the rules, Kim and Lindsay happen upon Kim's boyfriend Daniel Desario in mid-flirtation with the recently jilted Karen, and Lindsay suggests that the outraged Kim come over to her house to calm down. Mr. and Mrs. Weir are a bit surprised at the rough edges of their daughter's friend, but they welcome her into their home to dinner. The meal turns out to be the calm before the storm as Daniel soon shows up at the Weir's doorstep, looking for Kim. At the same time, Kim's mother calls the Weirs to discuss Lindsay's lies. Commercials deleted.
