FREAKS AND GEEKS: WE'VE GOT SPIRIT (TV)

Summary

One in this series about two distinct groups of high schoolers in 1980 Michigan -- the Freaks, hoodish outcasts-by-choice who love heavy metal, cars, and defying authority; and the Geeks, physically and socially underdeveloped kids who revel in science fiction and impersonations of their comedy idols. This episode revolves around the interesting and differing ways in which an upcoming McKinley High School basketball game affects each member of the (usually uninterested in sports) Weir family. Sam sees the game as an event at which he might get the chance to get to know Cindy Sanders better. When the usual Norseman mascot breaks his arm during a pep rally, Sam decides to audition for the role, figuring that it might give him a chance to impress cheerleader Cindy. Lindsay sees the game as the perfect opportunity in which to break off her relationship with Nick; she tells her mother, "He's just really intense, and I need my space." Mrs. Weir is so moved by Lindsay's confiding in her that she decides that she, too, will go to the game, accompanying her husband, who is planning to attend as a "representative" of the "leaders of the community" (as he tells the family over dinner). Meanwhile, Sam is hired for the mascot job after impressing bossy head cheerleader Vicki with his ebullient rendition of the funky chicken. At the same time, Lindsay's cynical, sports-hating friends find themselves the unlikely targets of an ambush by McKinley's rival high school. When the game finally arrives, it doesn't take long for everyone's plans to veer wildly off track. Commercials deleted.
