FREAKS AND GEEKS: GIRLFRIENDS AND BOYFRIENDS (TV)
Summary
One in this series about two distinct groups of high schoolers in 1980 Michigan -- the Freaks, hoodish outcasts-by-choice who love heavy metal, cars, and defying authority; and the Geeks, physically and socially underdeveloped kids who revel in science fiction and impersonations of their comedy idols. In this episode, Sam and Lindsay Weir become gradually more distracted from their day-to-day activities and more focused on their respective love lives. When Nick asks Lindsay whether she wants to hang out on an upcoming Friday night, she responds by asking whether he would like to see "The Elephant Man" or some other new movie. Nick quickly clarifies matters. "I was thinking we could just hang out at my place," he explains. "My parents are out of town." The nervous Lindsay agrees, but her insecurity is evident to everyone -- even the guidance counselor, Mr. Rosso, who brings Lindsay into his office and warns her of the dangers of herpes. Sam, meanwhile, prays that when lab partners for his biology class are announced, he will be paired with cheerleader Cindy Sanders, on whom he has had a crush for years. When Sam is instead teamed with hygienically challenged outcast Gordon Crisp, he is disappointed. When he finds out that Cindy is to be paired with his best friend Bill, he becomes paranoid and unreasonable, convinced that Bill will try to steal her. Lindsay's parents take an interest in her budding relationship with Nick when a single rose is delivered to the Weir household. The card attached reads: "I can't wate till tomorrow nite" [sic]. Lindsay is more torn than ever. Part of her wants so badly to fit in that she is willing to go to bed with Nick, but another part of her hears wisdom when her old friend Millie asks her, "Why would anyone buy the cow when they're getting the milk for free?" Commercials deleted.
