FREAKS AND GEEKS: CARDED AND DISCARDED (TV)
Summary
One in this series about two distinct groups of high schoolers in 1980 Michigan -- the Freaks, hoodish outcasts-by-choice who love heavy metal, cars, and defying authority; and the Geeks, physically and socially underdeveloped kids who revel in science fiction and impersonations of their comedy idols. This episode opens as guidance counselor Jeff Rosso appeals to the freaks to get their collective act together; he strums an acoustic version of Alice Cooper's adolescent angst classic, "I'm 18." The freaks are simultaneously shocked and mortified. After school, the Weir kids take a tongue-lashing from their father for spending too much time out of the house and not enough relating to their parents. As punishment, Mr. Weir insists that Lindsay and Sam stay in Friday night to play a few rounds of the stock-trading board game "Pit." Sam has other plans, however. He, Neil, and Haverchuck have befriended a new girl in the school who manages to be both beautiful and nice to everyone, and they all intend to go to an all-you-can-eat restaurant and stuff themselves. Lindsay has no real desire to stay in with her folks on Friday, either; she is set on checking out a local band called Feedback. Unfortunately, neither she nor any of her friends has the fake identification cards that could get them into the show. While Lindsay plots to get in touch with Millie's ex-con, fake ID-card-making cousin, Sam, Neil, and Haverchuck realize that McKinley's head cheerleader, Vicky, has set her sights on the new girl as a potential new cheerleader. They see this as a calamity. If she falls in with the popular crowd, they believe, their friendship is over. Lindsay and her friends find themselves going to ludicrous lengths to get the cards, but their shady connection finally pulls through. The geeks decide that one of them has to ask the new girl out so they draw straws. Lindsay and the freaks take off for their nights on the town, blissfully unaware of how memorable the concert will be. Commercials deleted.
