MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SEMINAR SERIES, THE: A CONVERSATION WITH JULIA CHILD {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio. Held at the Museum of Television & Radio in Los Angeles, and moderated by Los Angeles Museum vice president and director Steven A. Bell, this seminar examines the career of witty, improvisational television chef Julia Child.
The evening begins with a highlight tape of memorable moments in Child's television career, along with segments featuring Sara Moulton, Dan Aykroyd, Emeril Lagasse, Leah Chase, Jasper White, and Jacques Pepin. Following the screening, Child discusses the following topics: how she became involved in French cooking; her legendary sloppiness in the kitchen; the long road to publishing her first cookbook; how and why she opened a cooking school; the process that led to her relationship with public television, and WGBH-TV in particular, with "The French Chef"; the aspects of her character that made her a popular television personality; the television series in which she shared the spotlight with other chefs; her reasons for refusing to endorse products; the influence of the Food Network; and careers in the culinary arts. Questions from the audience induce Child to comment on the following: her views on electric versus gas stoves, her favorite restaurants and how she feels about eating others' cooking, what she thinks of fast and prepared foods, the experience of working on "Good Morning America," cooking mishaps on the air, the culinary training she received in France, less fattening ways to indulge in French cooking, the role of children in the kitchen, the part her husband played in her career, and the effects of color film on "The French Chef." In addition, Child links the roles of cookbooks and improvisation in cooking, gives her opinions on organic foods, reveals her favorite kitchen gadgets, recalls her first meal in France, explains where she gets new recipes, and grapples with the myth of chicken soup as medicine.
