MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SCREENING SERIES, THE:
THE ADVENTURES OF ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE AND
FRIENDS, PACKAGE 4: GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE AND
FRACTURED FLICKERS

Summary

"The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends"

Jay Ward, creator of Rocky and Bullwinkle, was a pioneer in television animation who produced sophisticated cartoons that were enjoyed by children and adults alike. His programs, populated by talking animals with a penchant for bad puns, presented literary jokes and cultural references to his audience with a knowing wink. From Crusader RabbitÕs struggles for rabbit rights to Boris and NatashaÕs iron-curtain antics, Ward and his associates combined topical satire with lighthearted flights of fancy. "Rocky and His Friends," which premiered in 1959, gleefully spoofed traditional cinema stereotypes such as the fervent narrator, true-blue heroes, and cliffhanging plot devices, providing television with an unorthodox new comic sensibility. The Museum is presenting selections of WardÕs best work, including "Crusader Rabbit," the first ever made-for-television cartoon series; the non-animated series "Fractured Flickers"; "Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties" and "George of the Jungle"; as well as several adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, two of WardÕs most enduring cartoon creations.

George of the Jungle and Fractured Flickers: Includes original episodes featuring the vine-swinging hero with a bad sense of direction; and "Fractured Flickers," silent films that were re-edited with new sounds, narration, and dialogue by Jay Ward and his production crew. The tape also features "Super Chicken" and "Tom Slick."
