EMMY AWARDS, THE 50TH ANNUAL (TV)

Summary

A special presentation of the fiftieth annual Emmy Awards for excellence in television. The program opens to find Bob Costas conducting pre-show interviews outside of the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles with nominees Patrick Stewart and Jenna Elfman. Presenters include John Lithgow, Jane Curtin, Chris Rock, Michael Richards, Jay Leno, Helen Hunt, Dennis Miller, Jenna Elfman, Thomas Gibson, James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, David Spade, Jon Lovitz, Tracey Ullman, Noah Wyle, Nathan Lane, Michael J. Fox, Hector Elizondo, Mark Harmon, Dylan McDermott, Lara Flynn Boyle, Julianna Margulies, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Features include clips of the "Top Ten Television Milestones" and tributes to Mike Stokey (the first Emmy winner), as well as snippets of "Sheriff John," Bob Hope, Milton Berle, and Sid Caesar. Also featured are a clip reel spanning fifty years of television, interviews with "regular viewers" about the ways in which television has affected their lives, and a performance by Broadway percussion group Stomp. Award recipients for outstanding achievements include Lisa Kudrow for "Friends" ("Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series"), Todd Holland for directing "The Larry Sanders Show," David Hyde Pierce for "Frasier" ("Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series"), Mel Brooks for "Mad About You" ("Best Guest Performance by an Actor in a Comedy Series"), Emma Thompson for "Mad About You" ("Best Guest Performance by an Actress in a Comedy Series"), Peter Tolan and Garry Shandling for writing "The Larry Sanders Show," Louis Horvitz, for directing the Academy Awards ("Best Director/Music/Variety Special"), Dennis Miller and staff for "Dennis Miller Live" ("Best Writing/Music/Variety Special"), Billy Crystal for hosting the Academy Awards, Gordon Clapp for "NYPD Blue" ("Best Supporting Actor/ Drama"), Camryn Manheim for "The Practice" ("Best Supporting Actress/Drama"), and George C. Scott for "Twelve Angry Men" ("Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie").

In the second half of the program, presenters include Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mary Tyler Moore, Gillian Anderson, Tom Brokaw, Jane Seymour, Whitney Houston, Garry Shandling, David Duchovny, Ellen DeGeneres, Christina Applegate, Christine Lahti, Roma Downey, Benjamin Bratt, John Larroquette, Dennis Franz, Candice Bergen, Peter Falk, Tom Hanks, Jane Leeves, Kelsey Grammer, Lea Thompson, Sigourney Weaver, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, Jeff and Beau Bridges, Kim Delaney, and Dick Van Dyke. Features include more clips of the "Top Ten Television Milestones," Brandy's rendition of the theme song to the television movie "Cinderella," a clip reel of famous final episodes of hit programs, a brief history of network news, a tribute to television pioneer Sylvester "Pat" Weaver, and a clip reel of career highlights of the television stars who died during the prior year. Award recipients for outstanding achievements in the field of television movies or mini-series include John Frankenheimer for directing the television movie "George Wallace," Mare Winningham for her performance in that film, and Kario Salem for writing "Don King: Only in America." In the world of television drama and comedy, Emmy recipients for outstanding achievements include Rob Burnett for writing on "The Late Show with David Letterman," Mark Tinker for directing "Brooklyn South" and Paris Barclay for directing "NYPD Blue" (the two tied for best director of a dramatic series), John Larroquette for his guest role on "The Practice," Cloris Leachman for her guest role on "Promised Land," Gary Sinise for his portrayal of George Wallace in the movie of the same name, Helen Hunt for "Mad About You," Kelsey Grammer for "Frasier," Andre Braugher for "Homicide," Christine Lahti for "Chicago Hope," David E. Kelley for producing "The Practice," and Peter Casey for producing "Frasier." Commercials deleted.
