MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SCREENING SERIES, THE:
MONSTER IN THE BOX: HORROR ON TELEVISION, PACKAGE
6: DANGEROUS INVESTIGATIONS
Summary
The horror genre has been a shadowy feature of the
television landscape since the earliest days of the
medium. Functioning both as escapist fantasy and dark
mirror of our shared anxieties and taboos, horror enjoys
a perennial relevance and unique malleability that
encompass a myriad of styles and attitudes, from the
frothy creepiness of "The Munsters" to the sophisticated
deconstructions of adolescence found on "Buffy the
Vampire Slayer." This series examines horror on
television over five decades of programming, celebrating
the diversity and vitality of the genre.
"Kolchak: The Night Stalker: 'The Zombie'"
Unflappable investigative reporter and spook specialist
Carl Kolchak digs up more than he bargained for when, in
the course of covering a mob war, he runs afoul of both
murderous capos and a vengeful animated corpse.
Co-writer David Chase displays the off-kilter wit and
organized-crime savvy that would later come into play in
his series "The Sopranos." (1974; 50 minutes)
"The X-Files: 'The Post-Modern Prometheus'" Shot in
glorious black and white in an exaggerated style
reminiscent of the classic horror comics of the fifties,
this witty and inventive reimagining of the Frankenstein
myth continues in the tradition of "Kolchak: The Night
Stalker" (an influence oft cited by X-Files creator
Chris Carter), placing traditional ghouls and goblins in
a contemporary setting. (1997; 50 minutes)
