FOTO NOVELAS: IN THE MIRROR (TV)

Summary

One in this four-part anthology drama series, inspired by the Mexican and Latin-American pulp novel tradition, interweaving realism and surrealism. In this episode, Clara takes a leave of absence from her medical residency. She returns home to stay with her family, and a large unexpected package arrives from Tia (Aunt) Aurelia, who has been dead for a year. Inside is a magic mirror, which shows images of the family's dead relatives, walking around in their own world. The family debates whether or not to keep the mirror, but Clara's father likes it, and it is hung over the dining room table. One day, Clara decides to open up to her sister, Isabel, about her reasons for leaving her residency. She recalls a night when she had been on call for thirty-six hours; a pregnant teenager came in hemorrhaging, and Clara was unable to save her life or that of her child. This loss spurred Clara to question her reasons for studying medicine in the first place. As she ponders her past, the mirror begins to haunt Clara. Each night, Tia Aurelia calls to her and torments her with pleas to join the peaceful world in the mirror. Clara is tempted and doesn't know what to do. One night, Tia Aurelia summons Clara to show her the image of the dead mother and child Clara has been mourning. Clara passes out, awakening the rest of the family with the sound of her fall. From the mirror, Tia Aurelia offers Clara's father a glass of liquid, which he takes and gives to Clara. When Clara drinks it, her future is decided at last.
