DAVID COPPERFIELD {PART 2 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:61619. Part two in this special two-part, made-for-television movie based on Charles Dickens' novel "David Copperfield," about a young writer who tells the story of his life and the people who have influenced it, hoping to reveal the kindness of some and expose the cruelty of others. The story continues as Copperfield receives a visit from Edward Murdstone, who warns him about revealing their past association to the Spenlows. Copperfield also gets to meet "the present Mrs. Murdstone." He wants to warn the young girl but holds his tongue. That night, he runs into a former friend of his from his old boarding school days, James Steerforth, who agrees to accompany him to Yarmouth to see Copperfield's childhood nanny, Clara Peggoty, and her dying husband, Barkis. After their return to London, Copperfield confesses his love to Dora Spenlow, who warns him about wooing her openly. She suggests that he write to her in secret in order to hide their love from her father. Time passes, and at a party thrown by Mr. Wickfield, Copperfield speaks with Agnes about his writing and his love life. He discovers that a former clerk, Uriah Heep, has blackmailed Agnes's father into making Heep a partner in the Wickfield law firm. A series of mishaps follows. Barkis dies; James Steerforth runs off with Peggoty's niece, Emily; Wilkins Micawber accepts a position as Heep's new clerk; Jane Murdstone discovers Copperfield's love letters to Dora; Aunt Betsey loses all of her money through a series of bad investments; and Spenlow dies of a heart attack, leaving Dora penniless and alone. Copperfield comes to Dora's aid by marrying her, but they are not quite content, and she is in ill health. More time passes, and Copperfield receives a letter from Micawber asking him to come to Canterbury to help get the Wickfields out from under the thumb of Uriah Heep. He goes, but when he returns to Dora, he finds that she is dying, and he reaches out to his family and friends for support. After her death, a distraught Copperfield escapes to the continent, where he runs into Edward and Jane Murdstone and vows to write a book exposing their treachery. Commercials deleted.
