MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: AN EVENING WITH LILY TOMLIN {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio. In this seminar, moderated by Museum president Robert M. Batscha in the Mark Goodson Theater, funnywoman Lily Tomlin discusses her work. First, some of her career highlights are screened, featuring clips (which are without audio on this tape) from: "The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe" (1992); "Lily for President?" (1982); "Lily" (1973); portraying Ernestine on "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" (1969); portraying Mrs. Judy Beasly on "The Lily Tomlin Show" (1973); "Carol Burnett and Friends" (1979); with Richard Pryor on "The Lily Tomlin Show" (1973); portraying Edith Ann on "The Lily Tomlin Show" (1973); and "Lily: Sold Out" (1981). Afterward, Tomlin touches on such topics as: when she realized she wanted to do comedy; her big breaks with "Laugh-In" and "The Merv Griffin Show"; how crazy "Laugh-In" actually was; dealing with George Schlatter, the creator and executive producer of "Laugh-In"; creating her Ernestine character; life as a stand-up comedienne; differences between sketch comedy and stand-up; her collaborations with Jane Wagner; her influences for humor, including comedienne Jean Carroll; how she developed the Edith Ann character; the origins of Edith Ann's big chair; modern comedians she likes, notably Jim Carrey, Chris Rock, and Billy Crystal; what success allows one to do; how fame affects performance; pushing boundaries in comedy; the origins of her character Tommy Velour; why it is so hard to host the Oscars; working with Pryor on some risque sketches; how she used to "work through" new material at comedy clubs; bringing a "personal touch" to her Broadway shows; and Ernestine's chances of working for President Bill Clinton.
