GIDEON'S CROSSING: THE LOTTERY (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic series about Dr. Ben Gideon and the residents who work with him at Metropolitan General Hospital in Boston. In this episode, Gideon and Pirandello discover that their experimental drug treatments on cancer-ridden mice have rendered the mice free of tumors. In his excitement over the breakthrough, Gideon mentions to a dying patient that he will be able to use the patient in the drug's FDA trials. Shortly thereafter, though, Gideon is told by his colleague that so many patients are up for the four spots in the cancer drug's trials that the hospital will hold a lottery to determine who will get to take part in the testing. Gideon is forced to confess to his dying patient that he spoke too soon when he promised him a spot in the trials, and he explains the lottery. Meanwhile, resident Sid becomes confused when the attractive wife of one of his seriously ill patients begins flirting with him. In a major lapse of professional judgment, Sid has sex with the woman in a hospital broom closet after she discloses details about her husband's sexual dysfunction. Gideon waits with his patient as the lottery unfolds, but both men soon get the bad news that Gideon's patient has not been selected to participate. Gideon promises the patient that he will put him on a more traditional drug but concedes that the man's odds for survival are decidedly slim. Both Gideon and Sid are then forced to suffer through the repercussions of their poor judgment. Commercials deleted.
