60 MINUTES {ANOTHER KAREN SILKWOOD, RAY COPELAND} {INCOMPLETE} (TV)
Summary
A portion of one in this series of news magazine
programs. In the first segment, Steve Kroft reports on
Linda Porter, a woman who tried to expose the safety
hazards of certain jobs at the nuclear plant at which
she worked, owned by Texas Utilities. When Porter
learned that the paint particles to which her crew was
exposed daily contained the carcinogen asbestos, she
reported it immediately to the company's management.
Instead of taking action to remedy the problem, Kroft
explains, supervisors threatened Porter and punished her
with horrendous work assignments. Kroft interviews
Porter and other workers from the plant about the health
threat. He also talks to Porter's doctor, Saul Wyland.
Wyland discusses his many patients, former employees
of the plant, who have work-related health problems that
could have been prevented. In the second segment, Ed
Bradley reports on Ray Copeland, an elderly Missouri
farmer who plotted a simple but elaborate series of
murders and escaped detection for three years.
Copeland's victims were homeless people whom he
picked up at shelters. Bradley talks to Copeland's wife
Faye, who claims that she was unaware of the crimes.
Both she and her husband were convicted for murder
after the police found five bodies buried at their farm,
however. In the third segment, Morley Safer introduces
Andy Rooney, who says that most people are
uncomfortable dealing with tipping and tipping
etiquette. Several waitresses are asked about the tips
they receive, and then Rooney offers a solution to the
problem: pay tipped workers a good salary to begin
with, and outlaw tipping. Commercials deleted.
