STRANGERS WITH CANDY: DREAMS ON THE ROCKS (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series that follows the exploits of Jerri Blank, a forty-six-year-old high-school freshman and self-described former "user, boozer, and loser." In this episode, Jerri decides to audition for the school play in an effort to gain the respect and admiration of her classmates. Despite the odds stacked against her, Jerri wins the role of "Mama," described in the casting-call notices as "a poor, heavyset black woman," in the classic "Raisin in the Sun." Mr. Jellineck urges Jerri to pack on forty pounds to lend authenticity to the part, then mistakenly believes that she has gained the weight shortly thereafter and orders her to stop. Although Jerri is thrilled to have been accepted into Flatpoint High's drama scene, her new positive attitude quickly turns sour when she realizes that her stepmother has cultivated a serious drinking problem. When Jerri's stepmother shows up completely drunk to "parent/teacher night" at school, she humiliates Jerri in front of all of her new friends. At the urging of a fellow thespian, Jerri begins attending "Children of Alcoholics" meetings in a nearby cocktail lounge. Jerri is intimidated at first, but she loosens up when she realizes that several of the teachers and administrators at school also attend the meetings. Jerri finally decides to quit going to the meetings when her stepmother promises to give up "everything but wine and beer," but Jerri's relief proves premature when the wine and beer drinker turns up at the play's opening night thoroughly soused. Commercials deleted.
