Summary

Continued from T:64055. Tape two of two. Part one of three in this cinéma vérité portrait of Juanita and Darrel Buschkoetter, a Nebraska couple struggling to save their farm and their marriage. Part one begins in May 1995: it covers the couple's history from their courtship to their current life with their three young daughters, and traces the roots of the current financial crisis the couple faces. Part one continues as the Buschkoetters anxiously await the end of the rains to plant their crops. Juanita has a phone conversation with a farm crisis counselor about her inability to pay thirty-nine dollars for a doctor to see her daughter Whitney for an ear infection. At the Central Community Center Lexington Clinic for distressed farmers, Juanita talks to other farmers about her financial struggles, admonishing them to open their books and question the bankers. Back at home, Juanita and Darrel discuss the possibility of Juanita earning a degree. Tensions remain high as the rains prevent Darrel from planting and working at the factory. Juanita's sister Brenda Hofstetter talks about how Juanita has on occasion needed to leave Darrel for a few days at a time because of his temper. Darrel is eventually able to plant, and by August 1995, a good crop begins to come in, but the family faces another crisis when the landlords decide they want to sell the ground they are farming.
