60 MINUTES {CITIZEN KEATING, WHO KILLED RUDOLPH HESS?, KING RICHARD} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of news magazine programs. In the first segment, "Citizen Keating," Steve Kroft investigates the history of the Lincoln Savings and Loan scandal, which he refers to as "the biggest financial disaster since the depression." The segment is largely made up of recently uncovered footage from a never completed 1986 documentary on the man behind the Lincoln S&L, Charles Keating. The footage reveals Keating to be almost comically loose with his money; in one sequence, he makes the spontaneous decision to give one of his secretaries a raise to $100,000 a year. After the clip, Kroft points out that Keating was being generous using other people's money. The reporter then explores Keating's political ties, noting that Keating donated several hundred thousand dollars to the campaigns of Senators John Glenn (D-Ohio), Alan Cranston (D-Calif.), and John McCain (R-Ariz.). He adds that there has been speculation that, in turn, the trio of powerful senators urged federal regulators to cease their investigations of Keating's financial dealings. In the second segment, "Who Killed Rudolph Hess?," Ed Bradley investigates the mysterious circumstances surrounding the 1987 death of Rudolph Hess, the longest living major Nazi figure. Hess, who was widely known as Hitler's right-hand man, had been in the Spandau prison since he pleaded "loss of memory" at the Nuremberg trials. Hess's death when he was ninety-three was ruled a suicide. That judgment was met with widespread skepticism, reveals Bradley, as it had long been rumored that Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev was planning to free Hess to live out his final days as a free man. Even Hess's most ardent enemies were furious at the possibility that Hess was murdered, Bradley notes, as they felt that he could have finally shed light on some of the mysteries of the war that linger on -- most notably, the rumored friendship between Hitler and the Duke of Windsor. In the third segment, "King Richard," Harry Reasoner looks into the cult following of automobile-racing legend Richard Petty. Reasoner explains that Petty is a fifty-two-year-old millionaire grandfather who has won seven national NASCAR championships and has racked up some 200 wins. He has inspired country songs, and he is the most recognizable figure in the most popular and profitable sport in the entire country. Reasoner grills Petty on his excitable fans, his brushes with death, and his many corporate sponsors. In the fourth segment, Andy Rooney questions the logic of government forms. Includes commercials.
