THE MISTS OF AVALON {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
Part one of two. This two-part drama offers a unique and fantastical take on Camelot and the Arthurian legend. Morgause, Igraine, and Viviane are three sisters and priestesses whose devotion to the "old religion" of the Goddess is constantly under fire from the growing Christian movement. Viviane leads the mystical and secluded community called Avalon, which exists in a parallel universe to Celtic England. As England wages war against the Saxon armies, the sisters grow and have families. Igraine has already borne a daughter when she receives a vision from the Goddess that she is fated to sleep with another man who will eventually become the King of England; their son will be his heir. Igraine is deeply traumatized when the prophecy comes true: she gives birth to Arthur, the son of the new king. Her sister Viviane takes over Igraine's mothering duties. Viviane, also known in the community as the Lady of the Lake, raises Igraine's daughter Morgaine in the ways of the Goddess. As Morgaine learns to harvest her psychic powers, young Arthur is taken from the community to be raised as the proper heir to the throne. Morgaine is saddened by her brother's distant travel, but she receives some comfort from her cousin Lancelot. Years later, Morgaine is set to lose her virginity in a pagan rite that honors the Goddess. Through an elaborate miscommunication, the costumed man sent to deflower the costumed Morgaine is actually Arthur, now grown up. Although no one else knows the truth about the father of the baby, the third sister, Margause, is extremely angry about its birth: she had hoped herself to give birth to an heir to the throne. As Morgaine begins to raise her new son, Mordred, Margause begins plotting the infant's demise. Commercials deleted. Continues with T:64632. This program is closed-captioned.
