ABC NEWS SPECIAL REPORT {COVERAGE OF TERRORIST
ATTACKS} {TERRORIST ATTACKS} (TV)

Summary

This "ABC News Special Report" presents coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath, as aired on ABC affiliate KABC-TV (Los Angeles). This coverage begins at 1:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday, September 13, with a continuation of the press conference by Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI director Robert Mueller. The two men respond to most questions by saying that they are either "unable to comment" or "not prepared to discuss that at this time." At the conclusion of this session, anchor Peter Jennings cuts to another press conference, given by Secretary of State Colin Powell. As the broadcast joins the press conference, a reporter is asking Powell about Iraq's failure to condemn the attacks on the United States. Powell declares that he is not surprised, calling Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein "one of the biggest terrorists on the face of the Earth" After Powell speaks, Jennings shows a map and points out the seven countries that U.S. authorities regard as state sponsors of terrorism: Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Sudan, Afghanistan, and North Korea. Reporter John Miller interrupts Jennings to tell him that a very recent report suggests that authorities have heard a group of people making noise under some rubble beneath one of the collapsed Twin Towers. Miller adds that dogs and equipment are being sent to the location post haste. Jennings then returns to the panel he introduced during the last hour of broadcast: the New York Bureau chief of the Financial Times, Andrew Hill; New Yorker business writer Ken Auletta; UBS America chairman Donald Marron; and ABC News business expert Betsy Stark. The panel continues its discussion about the possible financial impact of the attacks. Marron says that he thinks that the attacks will force businesses to band together and press ahead. Auletta says that he believes that businesses will have to consider immediate logistical concerns before they can worry about long-term effects. Stark points out that smaller businesses will be "hit much harder" by the attacks. The tape concludes with a lengthy interview by Connie Chung of Cantor Fitzgerald chief executive officer Howard Lutnick, whose business took up floors 101 through 105 of One World Trade Center. Lutnick emotionally describes his decision to come to work late and the probable loss of 700 employees, including his own brother, who worked on the 105th floor.
