ABC NEWS SPECIAL REPORT {COVERAGE OF TERRORIST
ATTACKS} {TERRORIST ATTACKS} (TV)
Summary
This "ABC News Special Report" presents coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath, as aired on ABC affiliate KABC-TV (Los Angeles). This coverage begins at 11:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday, September 1, in the middle of a report by Bob Brown. The report deals with patriotism among Americans and the sympathy and support being shown to the U.S. from around the world. Anchor Peter Jennings and correspondent John Miller recap the breaking story of the day -- that ten people were apprehended at JFK and LaGuardia Airports, with evidence suggesting that they were going to hijack two more flights. Miller also reports that officials have information that suggests that the terrorists originally planned as many as eight hijackings. Correspondent Brian Ross reports on the progress of investigators in tracing some of the hijackers' paths in Florida. Jennings then speaks with Billie Vincent, former head of security for the Federal Aviation Administration. Vincent explains why he does not believe that commercial flights should be flying yet. He also explains why he thinks U.S. airport security has not been adequately augmented, and he comments on the sky-marshal program. Next, Jennings reports that three Northwest Airlines employees intentionally breached a security checkpoint at Sky Harbor International Airport during the day. Airport spokeswoman Sonya Pastor confirms this report over the telephone. Jennings then speaks to Peter Black, a passenger who was on a flight from which police arrested a suspected terrorist, about the events he witnessed. After this, Lynn Sherr reports in a prerecorded segment about a firm of which the employees all escaped successfully from their offices in World Trade Tower Two. At this point, anchor Ted Koppel presents a special edition of "Nightline." He begins with a recap from John Miller on the breaking stories of the day, specifically the airport arrests. Terry Moran then describes the reluctance of the Bush administration to offer any comments on this story. He also mentions the increasing security precautions being taken in and around the White House. Next, Koppel speaks to Jim Hunter, another passenger on the flight from which suspect passengers were removed by police. Chris Bury then presents a series of public opinion polls, including one about the president's approval rating. John Donvan reports on the recovery of the airline industry and on new airport security standards. Koppel then announces that ten New York City policemen have just been rescued from the World Trade Center rubble. The fireman who found them describes the rescue. Correspondent David Wright describes the level of activity at LAX Airport in Los Angeles. Finally, Miller, Brian Ross, and Pierre Thomas talk to Koppel. Thomas begins the discussion, explaining that eighteen hijackers have been identified by U.S. authorities. He then explains why the attack is believed to have been a sophisticated operation.
