Summary
This internet program replays a 1981 "ABC Afterschool Special." In this drama, high-school senior Liesel Gilbert's world is turned upside down when her mother Jean is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Jean's sickness puts a lot of strain on Liesel's family members as they struggle to deal with their individual feelings about Jean's struggle and her impending death. Liesel begins therapy with a social worker named Sam and finally has someone with whom to share her feelings. Always in the shadow of her overachieving mother, Liesel wonders openly what is special about her own self. She tells Sam, however, that she has noticed that her mother also has feelings of loneliness and insecurity. As Jean's condition worsens, Liesel faces the challenge of leading a "normal" life while watching her mother die. After winning an essay contest at school, Liesel finally realizes what is special about her, and she discovers that she loves writing. Jean finally passes away in the presence of the entire family. Shortly after her mother's death, Liesel graduates from high school. Her father presents Liesel with a special gift, left behind by her mother.
