TOROS: FERIA DE CANAL+ PONTEVEDRA {BULLS: CANAL+
FAIR AT PONTEVEDRA} {TAPE 1 OF 2} {SPANISH} (TV)
Summary
Tape one of two. One in this series of sports events.
This installment presents the sixth bullfight of the
2001 Feria Bullfighting series from Pontevedra,
Galicia.Ê The hosts, who are identified only as Manolo
and Maestro Cenel, start off by talking about the
bullfighting stadium, owned by the Lozano brothers; 100
years old, it encompasses both tradition and modernity.Ê
They present shots of the matadors' preparations for the
event; one, Enrique Ponce, talks about his recent
successes; his passion for the sport; and his happiness
at competing in this bullfighting plaza, where the
audience is known as lively and supportive.Ê Next, the
hosts present highlights of the career of "El Juli," the
youngest of the matadors fighting.Ê They move from
there to a short interview with two of the spectators,
Maria Teresa Campos and Terelu Campos; this mother and
daughter are presented as important personalities in the
world of bullfighting.Ê The bullfight starts with the
presentation of the matadors -- Enrique Ponce, Manuel
Caballero, and Juli‡n L—pez Escobar "El Juli".Ê Next,
the bulls, all from Alcurrucen Farm, are pictured:
"Carrabinero" for Ponce, "Barbero" for Caballero,
"Flamenco" for Escobar. The bulls to be used in the
second round are "Ferretero," "Injuriado," and
"Clarinete."Ê The president of the bullfight, JosŽ Mar’a
L—pez, throws the key that opens the contest. The fight
starts with Ponce's fight against "Carrabinero."Ê The
audience follows the fight with ovations as Ponce
displays facility, poise, control, and force, as well as
right-handed technique.Ê The band plays the famous
"Paso Doble," which marks "La Entrada," or the
culminating moment of the fight; the bull becomes more
and more tired and bloody, and soon it is killed.Ê After
the end of the first fight, Maria Teresa Campos and her
daughter share their thoughts about it; their remarks
are followed by an interview with Ponce.Ê Just before
the second fight, a small accident occurs: when one of
the gates is not opened in time, the bull goes through
the circular corridor just outside the ring, running
past the press boxes. It injures people slightly and
appears to damage to the walls a bit. Not surprisingly,
this bull appears more violent than the first in the
ring; matador Caballero manages to bring it to its
knees, however. Again between fights the Compos
mother and daughter provide commentary. In the last
fight of this section of the program, "El Juli"
confronts a powerful brown bull, receiving a standing
ovation when he stabs the animal in a dramatic manner.
This portion of the program concludes with interviews
with "El Juli" and with Manuel Caballero, who talks
about the accident at the beginning of his fight.
