KINGDOMS, CHAPTER 1: MANY HEROES COMPETE FOR ONE

{MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)
Summary
The second of two programs on this tape. Part two of
chapter one in this television adaptation of the classic
Chinese novel, "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," written
by Luo Guanzhong in the late 1300s. This adaptation
closely follows the novel, telling the story of three
kingdoms competing for the unification of China.
Chapter 1, part two focuses on the power struggle
between the two political factions: the Ten Eunuchs led
by Empress Dong, who wants her son Xie enthroned; and
Empress He, backed by her brother General He Jin, who
wants her son Bian to become emperor. This installment
begins with the near death of Emperor Ling which
catalyzes the formation of the two political factions
mentioned above. The Ten Eunuchs strike at the opposing
faction by planning to kill General He. The plan is
leaked, however, and upon the death of Emperor Ling,
General He immediately enthrones his young nephew
Prince Bian as Emperor. Because his nephew is so young,
the real power lies in General He's own hands. General
He kills Jianshuo, a comrade of the Ten Eunuchs, but
makes the mistake of sparing the lives of the Ten
Eunuchs at the request of his sister Empress He.
Meanwhile, Empress Dong, leading the Ten Eunuchs, does
not recognize Bian as Emperor and appoints her own
young son Xie as Emperor. Because her son is so young,
Empress Dong appoints her brother as a Piaoji General
and defacto Emperor and authorizes the Ten Eunuchs to
share power. General He strikes back immediately and
forces Empress Dong to drink poisonous wine which kills
her. At this the Ten Eunuchs are determined to take
revenge and eliminate their adversary General He. The
Ten Eunuchs decide to call on an outside provincial army
led by General Dong Zhuo, who brings his troops to the
capital and kills General He and his followers. Part
two ends with General Dong Zhuo escorting the two young
emperors, Xie and Bian, back to the palace.
