Summary
The second of two programs on this tape. Part two of thirty-six in this television adaptation of the classic Chinese novel, "A Dream of Red Mansions," written by Cao Xueqin in the mid-1700s. While this adaptation follows the love triangle between the main male heir (Jia Baoyu) and his two female first cousins (Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai), it also shows the rise and fall of the four elite families (Jia, Wang, Shi, and Xue) of the novel.Ê In this installment Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu, and Baochai meet for the first time, and the Wang family reputation is put at risk over accusations of murder involving a family member. The episode begins with Jia Baoyu's visit to Mother Jia and Lady Wang. There he meets Lin Daiyu and is immediately enchanted by her, saying that she looks like a goddess and seems very familiar.Ê Baoyu asks whether Daiyu has a jade pendant like the one he wears, and when she replies that she does not he decides to throw his own away. This idea causes such a commotion that Mother Jia finally lies to Baoyu, saying that Daiyu had pendant like his before, but it is now in her mother's coffin. Baoyu reluctantly agrees to keep his jade pendant. Daiyu feels badly about causing such trouble for Baoyu, but Xiren (Baoyu's first personal maid) comforts her, assuring her that she will get used to Baoyu's strange behavior. Later, Lady Wang receives a letter informing her that her nephew, Xue Pan, has killed a young man surnamed Feng in a dispute involving the purchase of a maid. The murder case goes to Jia Yuchun, who initially wants justice served. When he realizes that Xue Pan comes from an influential wealthy family and is also connected to the Jia Family, however, he and the Xue family lie, announcing that Xue Pan died half a year earlier. Jia Yuchun lets Xue Pan off the hook, even though he discovers that the maid in the dispute is Zheng Yinglian, the small daughter of Zheng Shiyin, the man who gave him money to take the government exam eight years earlier. Zheng Yinglian was kidnapped and sold by a child smuggler the same night that Jia Yuchun left the Zheng family, he learns.Ê Even though Jia Yuchun feels guilty about letting Xue Pan free, he does not want to jeopardize his political career by offending the Xue and Jia families -- so he only punishes the child smuggler. After the case is settled, Xue Pan's mother (Auntie Xue) brings Xue Pan and his sister, Xue Baochai, to live with the Jia family, hoping that the new environment and the good company will help improve Xue Pan's behavior. On the day of the Xue family's arrival, the Jia family welcomes these relatives with delight, and Baoyu and Daiyu meet their cousin Baochai.
