HONG LOU MENG: LIU LAOLAO YI JIN RONGGUOFU {DREAM OF RED MANSIONS: LIU LAOLAO'S FIRST VISIT TO RONGGUOFU} {PT. 3 OF 36} {#98 (2)} {MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)
Summary
The first of two programs on this tape. Part three of thirty-six in this television adaptation of the classic Chinese novel, "A Dream of Red Mansions," written by Cao Xueqin in the mid-1700s.Ê While this adaptation follows the love triangle between the main male heir (Jia Baoyu) and his two female first cousins (Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai), it also shows the rise and fall of the four elite families (Jia, Wang, Shi, and Xue) of the novel.Ê In this installment Lady Wang is visited by some distant relatives and scandals start to arise in the Jia family over doubts about incest.Ê It begins with Liu Laolao and her grandson's visit to Lady Wang.Ê Saying that they are poor family relatives, Liu Laolao asks Zhou Rui's wife (a maid who came along with Lady Wang from the Jia family house) if she may see Lady Wang.Ê Zhou Rui's wife knows that Liu Laolao has come for money, so she says that Lady Wang is no longer taking care of trivial matters, and leads Liu Laolao to see Wang Xifeng (who is currently in charge of the household matters).Ê Xifeng receives them, but she is not sure who they are, so she holds off promising them anything.Ê Instead, she lets them eat lunch and sends a maid to ask Lady Wang's opinion. Lady Wang answers that they are not blood relatives, that they are some old friends with the same surname of Wang.Ê Xifeng gives them a little money and gets rid of them.Ê Zhou Rui's wife goes to report to Lady Wang what has just happened, and she finds her in Auntie Xue's unit.Ê Since the two ladies are busy talking, she talks to Xue Baochai about her health in the cold weather.Ê Zhuo Rui's wife then reports to Lady Wang about Liu Laolao, then Auntie Xue distracts her from the subject by giving her twelve flower pins to distribute among three young Jia ladies, Xifeng, and Lin Daiyu.Ê On her way out, Zhou Rui's wife notices the striking beauty of Xiangling (formerly known as Zhang Yinglian), and remarks that she can understand why Xue Pan killed the young Feng man for such a beauty.ÊÊ By chance, Zhou Rui's wife delivers the very last two flower pins to Daiyu, but Daiyu does not accept them because they are leftovers.Ê Later, on their way back from visiting Lady You and her daughter-in-law (Qin Keqing), Xifeng and Jia Baoyu hear an old servant (Jiao Da) ranting drunkenly about having to work late hours.Ê He is cursing the whole Jia family, accusing them of doing evil things, including "pahui" (a father-in-law sleeping with his daughter-in law).Ê Baoyu asks Xifeng what "pahui" means, but Xifeng tells him never to mind such drunk.
