XI YOU JI: GUAN FENG BIMAWEN {JOURNEY TO THE WEST: WUKONG IS APPOINTED KEEPER OF THE IMPERIAL STABLES} {PT. 2 OF 25} {#99 (1)} {MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)

Summary

The second of two programs on this tape. Part two of twenty-five in this television adaptation of the classic Chinese supernatural-fantasy novel, "Journey to the West," written by Wu Chengen in the mid-1500s. This adaptation follows the journey of the Tang monk Sanzang and his three pupils, detailing their adventures with monsters and gods as they travel to the Western Heaven seeking the three higher Buddhist scriptures. In this installment, Sun Wukong returns home from his Daoist training; he finds his weapon of choice at the Eastern Sea Palace; he brings chaos to the Hell Kingdom; and he becomes a horse keeper in Heaven. Upon Wukong's return to his own land, he finds monsters (Hunshi Mowang, Duijao Mowang, and Niu Mowang) occupying his cave. Using his new powers, he defeats them easily. The monsters, seeing that Wukong's abilities are much more powerful than theirs, apologize to Wukong, and he gives them a feast in return. While they're eating, Wukong show off more of his supernatural abilities, and the monsters suggest he should go to the Eastern Sea Palace to get a weapon to suit his abilities. Wukong arrives at the Eastern Sea Palace and demands a great weapon. Since the sea kingdom has no one who can overpower Wukong, the Eastern Sea Dragon King has no choice but to show him many weapons, but Wukong doesn't like any of them. Wukong finally eyes a holy iron column that's holding up the sea palace; he lifts it up and transforms it into a small stick that fits in his ear to allow easy transport. Wukong happily returns home and shows off his new weapon to his fellow monkeys. He transforms the iron stick, making it so big and tall that it reaches the clouds of Heaven and disturbs the Jade Emperor, who sends two gods to investigate. The two gods summon Wukong's soul to see the King of Hell. The King tells Wukong he is dead, but Wukong says his life is out of the hands of the King of Hell and beats him up. Both the Eastern Sea Dragon King and the King of Hell complain to the Jade Emperor about Wukong's actions. The Jade Emperor decides to give Wukong a position in Heaven in order to control him. The Jade Emperor sends one of his gods, Taibai Jinxing, to Earth to tell Wukong of the news, and Wukong agrees to go to Heaven, at least to see what Heaven is like. When Wukong arrives in Heaven, the Jade Emperor gives him the position of keeper of the imperial stables, and Wukong, not knowing what it really entails, gladly accepts the position. One day, a god named Wuqu Xingjun asks Wukong to bring him a horse, but Wukong refuses, and Wuqu Xingjun curses at Wukong that he is merely a "small insignificant horse keeper." Wukong now realizes that he was tricked into accepting such a demeaning position, and he runs back to his cave on Earth to be "Monkey King." Wuqu Xingjun reports Wukong's actions to the Jade Emperor, who sends many warrior gods, led by Tuota Litianwang, to capture Wukong.
